WHAT TO DO IN

MALDON VICTORIA

LOCAL HISTORY

Exploring Maldon is akin to stepping into a historical treasure trove. Renowned for possessing the best-preserved streetscape from Australia's gold rush period, Maldon boasts a remarkable collection of 19th-century buildings that showcase unique construction methods rarely found elsewhere in the country. Delve into the past as you stroll through the town's main and adjacent streets, uncovering remnants of mines and diggings that offer a glimpse into life in a 19th-century mining community.

Visit the Maldon District Museum in the historic old Market Building, the Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum, or tour Carman's Tunnel with a local guide. Discover the Maldon State Battery and learn about historic gold extraction processes. You will wonder at how people could have worked in such a dirty, damp, noisy and toxic environment.

BOUTIQUE SHOPPING

Maldon promises to give you a great shopping experience with some of the best boutique shops in Victoria.

There are shops for clothing and shoes, an old fashioned general store, a very famous lolly shop, a fudge & ice cream parlour, possibly the best heritage linen shop in Australia, a shop that will delight any collector of teddy bears, and, as befits a heritage town, quality antiques and collectibles.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Cairn Curran Reservoir, situated just 10km west of Maldon, offers a range of recreational activities along its shores, including multiple boat ramps for boating enthusiasts and ideal spots for picnicking and fishing. During the summer months, the reservoir is a popular destination for swimmers, yachties, and water-skiers, while birdwatchers can delight in observing a diverse array of bird species from the shoreline.

For those with a penchant for playing golf amidst picturesque country settings, Motel Maldon provides easy access to four charming courses, with additional options available in Maryborough and the greater Bendigo area. Gather a group and enjoy a friendly social tournament to add a fun challenge to your stay.

Maldon boasts a variety of hiking trails, walking tracks, mountain biking paths, and scenic lookouts, including the tower on Mount Tarrengower, offering a stunning 365° view of the surrounding region. Whether you prefer walking, biking, or driving, both Motel Maldon and the Maldon Visitors Centre offer a range of guide materials to assist you in navigating the area.
